He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Rose Marie (Lynn) and Jesse Gwartney; his siblings, Lloyd Gwartney, Marvin Gwartney and Doris Robinson; his great grandchildren, Justin Johnston, Alyssa Hutchens and Pete; his children, David Gwartney (Juanita), Kathy Tarbe (Ben), Douglas Gwartney (Jacque) and Dennis Gwartney (Cheryl); his sisters-in-law, Doris and Stella Herken; and also, James Jr. and Richard Herken. He was also cherished by many nieces and nephews.
