He was predeceased by: his parents, Frank Mertes and Alvina Mertes (Gegen). He is survived by: his wife Sandy; his sons, Josh Mertes and Chris Mertes (Andrea); his stepdaughters, Angela Miller (Kody) and Heather Heppler; and his stepmother Helen Mertes (Weber). He is also survived by eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105.
