He was predeceased by: his parents, Harlan Berggren and Hanna Berggren; his spouse Shirley Pfizenmaier; his brother Alan Berggren; and his son Steven.

He is survived by: his daughter-in-law Ruth Berggren (Affleck) of Manhattan; his daughter Stephanie Tharman (Steve) of Paxico; and his grandchildren, John Berggren (Libby Koerner), Brandon Berggren (Kim), Kristy Lawn (Dave), Dustin Brake (Jaci), Lindsey Brake, Conner Brake (Abby), Bethanie Krinhop (Matt), Blaine Tharman (Aimee Henry), Braden Tharman, Bryce Tharman and Baylie Tharman.
