He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Coleman Smith and Billie Jean Smith (Burke); his spouse Haruko Higa; and his siblings, Colene, Billy Gene, Elaine, Alan, Johnny, Alice, Margaret and Lee.
He is survived by: his daughter Kazumi "Kay" Ivey of Chautauqua, Kansas; and his brother Ray Smith of Rural Sedan, Kansas. He is also survived by many other nieces and nephews and other family members.
