He was predeceased by: his parents, William Nelson and Esther Nelson (Whelan); and his brothers, William, Norman, Jerome and Jerold Nelson.

He is survived by: his wife Sylvia Leis (Pralle); his children, William Nelson and Lisa Welday (David); his stepsons, Jarrod Leis (Becky), Lance Leis (Dana Grothe), Nick Leis (Laura) and James Leis (Crystal); his sister Kathleen Ayres (David); and his sisters-in-law, Diane, Darlene, Mary Anne and Ruth Nelson. He is also survived by nine grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established and will be designated later.
