He was predeceased by: his wife Helen McDowell (Trimble); his parents, Jack McDowell and Rosa McDowell; and his sisters, Sally Minor and Patricia Mosher.

He is survived by: his sons, James McDowell (Kelley) of Viola and Timothy McDowell of Baxter Springs. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
