He was predeceased by: his parents, George Schmitz and Louise Oenbring Schmitz; his wife Dolores H. Deters Schmitz; his daughter Mary Kay Schmitz; his granddaughter Stacey Schmitz; and his siblings, Adrian Schmitz, Francis A. Schmitz, Clarence J. Schmitz, Lambert Schmitz and Martha Engelken.

He is survived by: his children, David A. Schmitz (Gail) of Holton, KS, Lawrence "Larry" Schmitz (Christy) of Reading, KS, James "Jim" Schmitz (Alice) of Frankfort, KS, William J. "Bill" Schmitz (Wanda) of Newton, KS, Dennis Schmitz of Baileyville, Joseph G. "Joe" Schmitz (Amy) of Axtell, KS and Janet A. Ronnebaum (Mike) of Axtell, KS; and his sister Norita Rempe of Hutchinson. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given for St. Michael's Church and/ or for St. Michael's Cemetery, sent in care of the family.
