He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Delores Bates, and Bill Bates, Sr.; his stepfather Paul Williamson; his spouse Gayle D. Bates (Hayes); his sons, Bill Bates III and Williiam J. Bates (Rae Lynn); his grandsons, Ethan Bates and Justin Bates; and his siblings, Ethel Brooks (Frank), Martha Martin (Neal), Barbara Haycox (Bob), Joyce Leibst Debra (Rick) and James Bates.
