He is survived by: his parents, Edward L. Mertens and Sheila M. Mertens (Ehresman); his children, Briar Edward Mertens and Journee Riverlyn Mertens; his sisters, Jackie Gardner (Billy) of Middlesboro, Amber R. Pfeiffer (Mark) of Kendallville, April R. Holliday (Todd) of Fort Wayne and Autumn Lehman (Josh) of Churubusco; the mother of his children Samantha; and his friend Angola. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
