He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Peterson and Grace Peterson. He is survived by: his wife Vivian Hesser; and his sons, Greg and Gary Peterson (Susan). He is also survived by five grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Cancer Services for Randolph County.
