He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter Smith and Hazel Smith (Oatess); his siblings, Gerald Herald, Glen Herald, Frank Herald, David Smith, Billy Joe Smith, Florence Cotterman, Lucile Boose, Martha Smaltz, Ruth Beckley and Jo Ann Smith; his grandson Christopher Johnson; and his grandson-in-law Joe Robison.
He is survived by: his wife Janet "Jan" Smith of Winamac; his children, Carol Hartle (Todd) of Warsaw, Mark Heiny (Hiroko) of Indianapolis, Scott Heiny (Tracey Parish) of Royal Center and Kevin Heiny (Louise) of Star City; his sisters, Agnes Small (Frances) of Royal Center, Linda Stillwell (Bill) of Logansport and Billene Fry (Russell) of Noblesville; his grandchildren, Brittany Adamson (Derek), Brandi Fulton (Zach), Braxton Hartle (Kalista), Sara Heiny, Amanda Brooks, Jodie Muckenfuss, Sheena Heiny Tolson, Cougar Heiny, Shelby Heiny, Raelyn Howard, Corey Howard, Karli Buttice (Ty), Kyle DeHaven, Connor Fabian, Morgan Fabian, Rachel Fabian and Kristie Doty (Brian); and his great grandchildren, Parker, Brock, Kinzie Adamson, Reagan, Roree Fulton, Jaron Kidd, Isiah, Madison Hardy, Derek Napier, Ivan Muckenfuss, Courtney Apple Muckenfuss, Kwinton Heiny, Addilee Stover, McKayla Wingard, Payton West, Braxton Doty and Taylor Hoover. He is also survived by one daughter and four sons.
