He was predeceased by: his parents, Horace Oaks and Eleanor Ward Oaks; and his siblings, Mary Ellen Shaffer and Roy Oaks. He is survived by: his wife Joan C. Oaks of West Lafayette; his sons, Eric D. Oaks of Logansport, Scott (Lisa Oaks), Curtis (Shannon Oaks) and Bradley L. Oaks of Brookston; his stepchildren, Brian McCarty of Otterbein, Dawn, Bart Runner of Cicero, Doug and Kelly Dunwoody of West Lafayette; and his siblings, Carol Oaks of Edna Mills, Freda, Walter Wilson of Colorado Springs, CO and Ruth Ann Pearson of Delphi. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 9 step grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren.
