He was predeceased by: his parents, Jack Szmanda and Dolores M. Szmanda (Gittins); and his brother Mark Szmanda. He is survived by: his children, Sara Higgs of Bicknell and Adam Szmanda of Princeton, KY; and his sister Michaeleen Miller (Douglas) of Florida.
