He was predeceased by: his parents, William Cates and Thelma Cates (Evans); his siblings, Roger Cates and Marlene (Bill Kimmell); his brother-in-law Michael Lynch; and his nephew Steven Lynch.
He is survived by: his wife Barbara Cates (Fields); his son Robert "Bo" Cates of Elnora; his sister Carolyn Lynch of Carlyle, Illinois; and his grandchildren, Aulbrey Cates, Alexandra Cates, Addison Cates and Peyton Cates.
