He is survived by: his wife Nancy Whelan (McIntire); his children, Linda Cortopassi (Richard), Guy Whelan (Dorothea), Nancy Brokaw (Fred), Mary Whelan and Nora Whelan; and his siblings, Lonnie Whelan and Lois Johnston. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
