He was predeceased by: his mother Rovena Cates (Vanover); his wife Debra "Debi" Cates (Smith); his sister Morta Riggs; and his brother-in-law Steve Niswonger. He is survived by: his father Morton Cates; his children, Shannon Cates of Evansville, IN, Amanda Bennett (Brett Mattingly) of Wadesville, IN and David Michael Cates II (Jennifer Dalton) of Evansville, IN; his siblings, Gayla Higgins (Don) of Owensboro, KY, Patricia Niswonger of Evansville, IN and Douglas Cates (Marlene) of Largo, FL; his grandchildren, Madison Cates, Evan Cates and Kyndal Bennett; his great grandchild Taytum Cates; and his brothers, Dennis Engi and Mike Slabaugh. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Visitation was held on Friday, January 24th 2025 from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Saturday, January 25th 2025 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at the Browning Funeral Home (738 E Diamond Ave, Evansville, IN 47711). A celebration of life was held on Saturday, January 25th 2025 at 10:00 AM at the same location.
