He was predeceased by: his mother Mary Helene Vessles; his sister Jane Wright; and his daughter-in-law Monica Whelan. He is survived by: his son Charles "Chuck" Whelan of Michigan City, Indiana; his sister Alice Marlene Johnston of Tennessee; and his grandchildren, Nichole Hamby (Josh), Andrea Schmaltz (Adam), Richard Shock (Sheena) and Thomas Whelan. He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
