He was predeceased by: his parents, John E. Smith and Ruth I. Smith (Powell); his son John Lewis Smith; his brother Joseph D. Smith; and his brother-in-law Jerry Peterson.
He is survived by: his wife Ada J. Watson; his children, James R. Smith II, Rebecca Gary (Darin), Karen Smith (Beth), Sandra Spence (Matt), Martha Floyd (Dave), Stephen Smith (Ashley), Timothy Smith (Julie), David Smith (Teresa), Ruth Hood (Chuck) and Rachel Hightower (Matthew); his grandchildren, Crystal, James, Micheal, Nicol, Sara, Esther, Lily, Kyle, Trisha, Carissa, Brody, Megan, Tyler, Lucas, Colin, Stephen, Adaline, Cameron, Jamall, Jenna, Jessica, Hannah, Isaac, Dylan, Alissa, Jaylin, Isabella, Trenton, Bradley, Gracie, Malorie, Addison, Brady, Mason and Enan; and his siblings, Donald Smith (Elsie), Mary Ann Peterson, Linda Kay Reynolds and John Smith (Debrah). He is also survived by several great-grandchildren.
