He was predeceased by: his parents, Arleigh Varner and Lida Mae Varner (Smith); and his siblings, Sarah Closser, Ellen Phillips, Harold and Raymond Varner.
He is survived by: his wife Marlys J. Richardson; his children, Christine Murphy (Dana Hook) of Tucson, AZ and Dr. David Varner (Pattie) of South Bend; his grandchildren, Sarah Hunt (Adam), Anne Cunningham (Greg), Joshua Murphy (Connie), Eric Varner (Lauren) and Dana Lori (Luke); his great grandchildren, Sam, Isabelle, Grant, Tyler, Matthew, Porter, Elise, Roman and Hudson; and his brother Donald Varner of Cary, NC..
