He was predeceased by: his parents, John A. Smothers and Katherine Smothers (Stewart); his daughter Melissa Martin; and his brother Chester Smothers. He is survived by: his children, Brenda Martin (Jimmy), Kimberly Jo Thompson (Scott), Gary Dale Helvey (Teresa), Carolyn Johnson, Jason Helvey (Diana Crafton), Kathy Jo Cabelero (Miguel) and Ashley Smothers (Lexi); and his siblings, Mary Miller, Diana Chaney, Charles Smothers, David Smothers, Gary Smothers and Junior Smothers. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Thursday, October 31st 2024 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Freeman Family Funeral Homes (819 S Harrison St, Shelbyville, IN 46176). A funeral service was held on Thursday, October 31st 2024 at 4:00 PM at the same location.
