He was predeceased by: his parents, Harold A. Gates and Florence G. Gates (McDonald); his stepson Gilbert Williamson, Jr.; and his brothers, Frank Gates and Phil Gates.
He is survived by: his brother Corporation; his wife Artie B. Gates (Warfel); his children, Michael Gates, Richard Gates and Kimberly Gates; his stepchildren, Vickie Dodd, Hilda Earles (Mark), Michael Hoover and Marilyn West (Dennis); his sister Sharon Barlow; and his grandchildren, Michael Hoover, Danielle Hayes (Jon), Amanda Vazquez (Juan) and Tabernea Hoover. He is also survived by several great grandchildren.
