He was predeceased by: his parents, Luther Merkel and Anna Merkel (Haverstock); and his siblings, Doyle Merkel, Betty Fiscus and Lois Marie Merkel.
He is survived by: his wife Janet Merkel; his children, Russell Merkel (Danielle), Denise Merkel (Steve Bilskie) and Janell Merkel; his grandsons, Adam Merkel and Collin Merkel; and his sister Joan Richardson. He is also survived by nephews, nieces and cousins.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Scotland Historical Society or the Scotland Cemetery.
