He was predeceased by: his parents, Samuel Ellingsworth Cottrell and Mary Ethel Lahue Cottrell; his siblings, Marion Cottrell and Patricia Haviland Jenkins; and his granddaughters, Emily Rae Cottrell and Gabrielle Dominique Cloyd.
He is survived by: his wife Elzina Cogar Cottrell; and his children, Samuel Cottrell, Jr. (Marion) of Missouri, Sandra Smith (Conrad) of Rockville, Dennis Cottrell (Amanda) of Bridgeton, Debra Richardson (Roger) of Dana, Bobbie Richardson (Russell) of Clinton and Robert Cottrell of California. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
