He was predeceased by: his wife Mary R. Lawhorn Shaffer; his daughters, Sally I. Smith, Judy Goins and Robin I. Matthews; his grandson Ricky Goins; his great grandchild Brandon Shaffer; his siblings, Raymond, Woodrow, Frank, Jack, Bill Shaffer, Edna Balthis, Blanche Roach and Ola Rentz; his daughter-in-law Debbie Sartain Shaffer; and his granddaughter Jaime Matthews Frye.
He is survived by: his children, June E. Hesson (Scott) of Richmond, Indiana, Doug Shaffer of Lynn, David E. Shaffer (Julia) of Richmond, Kenneth "Kenny" Shaffer (Tricia) of Richmond and Danny G. Shaffer of Fountain City, Indiana; his nieces, Jenny Foreman and Carol Bussen; and his friend Pointe. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren.
