He was predeceased by: his parents, Everette and Ardith Byrd (Schriener); his wife Barbara Harris; his former wife Carol; and his sister Delila Byrd.

He is survived by: his sons, Richard W. Byrd (Tonya) of West Lafayette, Jeffery A. Byrd (Roxane) of Remington, Michael Byrd of Monticello and Gregory S. Chastain (Jean) of Boston, MA.; and his sister Donna Byrd of Remington, Ind.. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren.
