He was predeceased by: his parents, Bernard D. Gerkin and Helen M Gerkin (Pruitt); his wife Hazel Wheeler; and his siblings, Mike Gerkin and Wilma Jean Gerkin.
He is survived by: his siblings, Mary Berry, Tammie Wease, Randy Gerkin (Carol), Jimmy Gerkin (Dawn) and Bernard Gerkin, Jr.; and his stepchildren, Mary R. Goen, Dora Gipson, John Sullivan, Charles Sullivan, Wayne Sullivan, Robert Sullivan, Raymond Sullivan, Randall Sullivan and Lloyd Sullivan. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
