She was predeceased by: her parents, Robert Townsend and Genevieve Townsend (Dowler); her husband Paul Smith; her former husband Dwight Caldon Murphy; her children, Michael Murphy and Nahoma Smith Brewer; and her siblings, Ted, Robert, Donald, Joe Townsend, Nettie Baldwin and Kay Smith.
She is survived by: her children, Timothy Murphy (Bethany) of North Vernon and Paula Gerth (Willard) of North Vernon; her siblings, George Townsend (Fran) of Jackson, Tennessee, Adrienne Tishner of Goldsmith and Julia Miller of Alexandria; and her grandchildren, Shana Huffman (Andy) of North Vernon, Victoria Dobbs (Brad) of North Vernon, Gabriel Gerth (Shelby) of North Vernon, Rebekah Miller (Ryan) of North Vernon, Michael Gerth (Dustie) of North Vernon, Kameron Murphy of North Vernon, Kaleb Murphy of North Vernon, Erin Manno of Canton, Sara Thomas (John) of Butlerville, Kaylee Murphy of Avon and Codie Thompson (Tyler) of Hayden. She is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home in honor of Shirley to the Graham Baptist Church, Neuroblastoma Foundation, National Kidney Foundation, or Leukemia Society.
