He was predeceased by: his parents, H. Truman Stephens and Mildred "Maxine" Smith Stephens Hammond; his stepfather Richard L. Hammond; and his brothers, Max, Jerry, Richard and Dan Stephens.

He is survived by: his wife Karen A. Banks Stephens; his sons, Marcus Bryant Stephens of Scipio and Derick Stephens (Krysta) of North Vernon, Indiana; his grandchildren, Andrew, Jacob, Aydan, Danton and Kolton; and his brother Ron Stephens (Sheila) of Columbus. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins.
