He was predeceased by: his father John H. Steele; and his grandson Nicholas Short. He is survived by: his wife Diana Steele (Riecken); his daughter Kristen Short (Andrew); his stepchildren, Kevin Weinzapfel (Angie), Keith Weinzapfel (Katrina), Kennt Weinzapfel (Jamie) and Kendra Weinzapfel; his grandchildren, Adam, Eric Moore, Collin, Julia Short, Olivia, Jack, Reese, Grant Weinzapfel, Alleina Basham, William, Cash and Stella Hougland; and his sister Debbie Kost (Dennis).
