He was predeceased by: his parents, John Henry and Cornelia Anne Schmitt (Elpers); his wife Jo Anne Schmitt (Gore); and his siblings, Dorothy Brown, Eileen Hollander, Elizabeth Nalley, Maxine Schneider, Joan Izola Schmitt, Iona Morris, Darlene Will, Yvonne Howell, Donald and Thomas Schmitt.
He is survived by: his children, John Eric Schmitt (Beth), Judith "Missy" Shumate (Brandon), Julie Gersch (Kevin) and Janice Roeder (Chris); his sister Nancy Lannert; his grandchildren, Erin Schmitt Tuley (Heath), Brendon Schmitt (Elizabeth), Lauren Schmitt, Bailey Shumate, Joshua Shumate, Hannah Gersch Lobo (Stein), Holden Gersch, Harrison Gersch, Abigail Roeder, Lorna Roeder, Owen Roeder and Wesley Roeder; and his great grandchildren, Dani Jo Tuley, Andi Rose Tuley and Anthony John Schmitt.
