He was predeceased by: his parents, John Jeffrey and Leona Gartner (Linder); and his siblings, Dorothy Allen, John and Dick Gartner.

He is survived by: his spouse Kenna C. Gartner (Slick); his children, Robert Gartner Jr. of Brown County, Steven Gartner (Kathy) of Brown County, John Gartner (Darla) of Spearsville and Christina Buccos (Thomas) of Brown County; and his brother-in-law Harry Slick of Indianapolis. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
