He was predeceased by: his parents, Orville R. Wells and Florence Wells (Speeker); his former wife Mary E. Wells (Swinney); his daughter Margaret Elaine Wells; and his brother F. Bruce Wells.

He is survived by: his children, Mary Frances Johnson (Arlan) of Jamestown, Anne Anderson (Mike) of Nashville, Catherine Bay (Tom) of Morgantown, Paul "Joe" Wells (Judy) of Morgantown and James Wells (Robin) of Lafayette. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
