He was predeceased by: his parents, Earl C. Merriman and Exie Merriman (Williams); and his son Christopher David Merriman. He is survived by: his daughter Shawn Elizabeth Winchester (Christopher) of Greensburg; his grandson Dylan Lawson of Martinsville; his children, Lori Bass (Michael) of Martinsville, DuWayne Shanafelt of Nashville and Leslie Langley of Gosport; his grandsons, Tyler, Zachary Bass of Martinsville and Steven Shanafelt of South Dakota; his former wife Patricia Dianne Merriman of Martinsville; and his friends, Troy and Nina Law of Brown County.
