He was predeceased by: his parents, Harry A. Kays and Bonnie Ethel Kays (Smoot); his former wife Norma Jean Kays (Caudill); and his siblings, Don, Bill, Dean Kays, Sue Link and Dora "Cookie" Barrier.
He is survived by: his wife Jackie Kays (Johnson); his children, Jim Kays of Florida, Terry Kays of Mooresville and Kelly Carr of Indianapolis; and his sister Linda Kays. He is also survived by three grandchildren; three great grandchildren.
