He was predeceased by: his parents, John F. Smith and Fannie Smith (McClain); and his sisters, Barbara Harrell and Thelma Cress. He is survived by: his wife Marsha Smith of Tippecanoe; his sons, John A. Smith of West Lafayette, Bart D. (Elisa Smith) of Lisle, Ill and Eric M. Smith of Tippecanoe; his grandsons, Cameron, Levi, Logan, Caleb and Luke; his sisters, Patricia (Jim Hensley) of Tippecanoe and Joyce Roe of Warsaw; his brothers-in-law, Michael (Donna McDowell) of Elizabethton, Tenn and Richard McDowell of Rochester; and his daughter-in-law Jacqueline Smith of West Lafayette. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Due to COVID-19 concerns, a private graveside service will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John's memory to the Tippecanoe Improvement Association or the Tippecanoe Fire Department.
