He was predeceased by: his parents, George Ralph and Minerva J. Atherton (Elsbury); and his siblings, Ralph Atherton, Daniel Atherton, David Atherton, Roger Atherton, Richard Atherton, Mary Terrell and Erma Jean Atherton.
He is survived by: his wife Maxine "Lou" Atherton (Peveler); and his children, James R. Atherton (Renee) of Martinsville, Cindy A. Trout (David) of Martinsville, Donne Sue Steinbrook (Ron) of Martinsville and Debra Lou Myers (Chuck) of Martinsville. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren.
