He was predeceased by: his mother Rebecca Sue Hawkins (Shanklin). He is survived by: his wife Nancy Hawkins (Meyer) of Martinsville; his children, Mary Lynn Hawkins of New Zealand, Debbie Hawkins of New Jersey, Stacy Claprodt (Adam) of Mooresville, Joseph Richard Hawkins of Martinsville and Angela Miessler (R. C.) of Pennsylvania; his father Richard Garfield Hawkins Sr. of Jamestown; and his sister Carla Hedrick (Doug) of Jamestown. He is also survived by seven grandchildren.
