He was predeceased by: his parents, George Spears and Thursa Spears (Hoke); his sons, Joseph M. Spears Jr., Bobby Joe and Billie Joe Spears; and his close friend Vivian Chipley.
He is survived by: his children, Samantha Jo Thomas (Johnnie Sr.) of Evansville, Tonya Dale Epperson (David) of Hardinsburg, Richelle Lynn Higdon (Aaron) of Kissimmee, Joni Lynne Draper (Dean Holt) of Cave City and Jessie Chipley of Kentucky. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
