He was predeceased by: his parents, William Sherman and Grace Edith Kerns (Peck); his wife Helen Kitchen; and his siblings, Marcella Myers, Leola Middleton, Clela Atwater, Pauline Betts, Ione Holcomb, Thelma Britton, Helen Foltz, Eveyln Coney, Edith Marten, William Kerns, Jr., Elmer Kerns, Clinton Kerns, Thurman Kerns, Art Kerns and Donald Kerns.

He is survived by: his children, Ronald Kerns (Vicki) of Bradenton, Jeanne Kerns of Elkhart, IN and Karen Gayheart (Preskel) of LaGrange, IN; and his grandchildren, Randy Kerns (Linda) of Riverview, FL, Kari Caudill (Paul) of Cumberland, IN, Brandon (Michelle), Kasey Kavanagh (Patrick) of Spencerville, IN and Jeremy Oakley of LaGrange. He is also survived by 15 great grandchildren.
