He was predeceased by: his parents, Gordon Smelser and Rosella Hanns Smelser; his siblings, Robert Smelser and Alberta Smith; his former wife Helen Hendersot Smelser; his son Terry; his wife Jean Ann Smith Smelser; and his grandson Michael Smelser.
He is survived by: his children, Gary (Donna) of West Lafayette, Jerry (Norma) of Lafayette, Cindy Bowman of Romney and Gail Rupp (Stan) of Lafayette. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
