He was predeceased by: his parents, Hubert Austin and June Mitchell (Shaw); his sister Shirley Shrum; and his grandson Josh Handy. He is survived by: his wife Lydia Mitchell (Ringhof); his children, Dennis Mitchell (Kim), David Mitchell, Mona Thomas (Chris), Diana Wood (PJ) and Laura Copeland (Alex); his sister JoAnn Pontius; and his grandchildren, Becky Davis, Jourdan Metzger, Mallory Curwick, Austin Thomas, Lauren Stetler, Liam Copeland and Elise Copeland. He is also survived by six great grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, December 10th 2024 from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM at the Hippensteel Funeral Home (822 N 9th St, Lafayette, IN 47904). A funeral service was held on Tuesday, December 10th 2024 at 2:30 PM at the same location.
Gene's family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to an organization of the donor's choice.
