Charles Lee McConnell Obituary
Charles "Charlie" Lee McConnell, 77, of La Porte, passed away peacefully at 3:41 p.m., Friday, July 7, 2023 at Northwest Health, La Porte with his daughter by his side.
He was born on March 1, 1946, in Coeburn, Virginia, to Ceburn and Mary (Dingus) McConnell. Charlie was born at home on a small farm in Southwestern Virginia. His family moved several times, but eventually settled in New Buffalo, MI. Charlie attended and graduated from New Buffalo High School.
Charlie joined the US Army and proudly served his country by serving two tours of duty in Vietnam. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, he worked as a roofer for several years. Later, he worked and retired from Republic Services, where he enjoyed working as a heavy equipment operator.
On March 8, 1974 Charlie married the love of his life, Helen Sue (Durham) McConnell, who survives.
Charlie, otherwise known by his family and friends as "Uncle Chooch", was a hardworking, dedicated family man who was loved and respected by all who knew him.
Charlie enjoyed trap shooting and was an avid outdoorsman. In his retirement, he enjoyed puttering around his pole barn and tending to his garden and yard. He was also an active member of the New Buffalo Rod and Gun Club.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sue; daughter, Cynthia (Shawn) Smith of Kalamazoo, Michigan; sister, Judy (Clint) Barnes of Rathdrum, Idaho; brother, Ken (Joyce) McConnell of Kerrville, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Cremation will take place. A celebration of life will take place at a later date. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, 247 W. Johnson Rd., La Porte, (219) 362-3100 is caring for the arrangements.
