He was predeceased by: his parents, Jesse Herbert and Mary Handy (Haddix); his wife Esther May Fisher; his son Larry Handy; and his siblings, George Handy, Ben Handy, Orma Handy, Charles Handy, Paul Handy and Mary Elizabeth Costello.

He is survived by: his children, John Handy (Shirley) of Wheaton, IL, Jerri Handy of Haywood, CA, Janice Yost (Kent) of Upland, IN and Jeffrey Handy (Stacy) of Russiaville, IN; his daughter-in-law Barb Handy; his sister Lucille Ponce; and his grandchildren, Joe Handy (Katie), Amy Slennett (Sam), Joshua Turnbull (Angela), Amber Castagnola, Erin Wood (Kyle), Emily Wymore (Josh), Danielle Tobey, Seth Handy (Diane), Stephen Handy (Sarah), Ian Handy (Aimee-Nicole), Kara Short (Christopher) and Karic Stemmel (Angel). He is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren.
