He was predeceased by: his parents, Dave Nelson and Anna Lisker Nelson; and his brothers, Harry and Max. He is survived by: his wife Estelle Calderón; his children, Alan Nelson (Stephen Mooney) and Michelle Anixter (Darren); and his grandsons, Evan, Grant and Austin. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages a show of support by making a contribution to the Veterans Administration Voluntary Service Office or the Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis.
