He was predeceased by: his wife Marilyn Appel; his daughter Lori Lee; his parents, Otto Appel and Nellie Appel; and his siblings, Marion Appel, Otto Appel Jr., Hilbert Appel, Marylou Kramer, Kathrin Wybrew and Losialene.

He is survived by: his sons, Darric Appel and Duane Appel (Jamie); and his grandchildren, Alexis, Taylor, Luke, Logan and Noah.
