He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter E. Schirmer and Stella Ann Maupin Schirmer; his wife Dorothy Rita Schmidt Schirmer; his son Robert Edwin "Dutch" Schirmer; and his sister Lillian Schirmer Green.
He is survived by: his children, Scott Schirmer (Glenda) of Madison, Michael L. Schirmer of Hanover, Eric F. Schirmer of Hanover, Indiana and Teresa A. Schirmer Noel of Hanover, Indiana; and his grandchildren, Scott W., Ryan (Ashley), Robert W., Rielly Wilber (Josh), Erica, Laci, Michael, Brandy Ritchie and Stacy Ritchie. He is also survived by grandchildren, 1-great great grandchild; and other relatives.
