He was predeceased by: his parents, Audney Hughes and Etta May Hughes (Pardue); his wife Dixie Hughes; his son Richard L. Hughes; and his siblings, William Hughes, Vivian Depaulo, Catherine Owens and Hazel Allen. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and one grandchild.
