He was predeceased by: his parents, Earnest Mathis and Nettie Mathis (Davidson); his children, James, Wayne Mathis and Kelly Mathis; and his sisters, Jean Range and Bettie Deaton.

He is survived by: his wife Cadie Mathis (Shelton); his sons, Donald "Don" Mathis of Columbus, Ronald "Ron" Mathis of Columbus and Wade Mathis of Greensburg; his stepson Todd Reynolds (Annette) of Greenfield; his daughter Carrie Sawyer (Jerry) of Dillsboro; his stepdaughters, Robin Sizemore of Rushville and Beth Clark of Vevay; his siblings, Earnest Mathis, Jr. (Twanette) of Columbus and Marylinda Finn of Madison; and his grandchildren, Christopher Sawyer, Crystal Sawyer, Dana Mathis, Hanna Mathis, Colton Mathis, Cody Mathis, Austin Mathis, Elijah Sizemore, Peyton Sizemore, Will Wallace and Autum Clark. He is also survived by 8 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews.
