Carrie Smith Obituary
GREENFIELD - Carrie Ellen (Hodge) Smith, of Greenfield, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on October 21, 2022. She was born in Greenfield on February 21, 1964 to Caroline (Anderson) and William Hodge. She graduated from Greenfield Central High School in 1982, where she was an active member of the Sunshine Society. She graced the GCHS stage many times with her beautiful singing voice and participated in numerous teen pageants. After high school, she attended the University of Evansville. On June 21, 1986, she married the love of her life, Kevin McGuire Smith, and was his faithful and loving bride for 36 years. They completed their family by welcoming daughter Amber Marie on September 15, 1989 and son Anderson McGuire on October 20, 1992.
Carrie held numerous jobs throughout her life, including administrative positions with local churches, an Indianapolis law firm, and a nonprofit start-up. Her colleagues remember her can-do attitude and the joy she brought to every meeting.
Carrie will be remembered for many things, but especially for her kind and gentle demeanor, her contagious laugh, her trademark dimples, her strong devotion to her faith, and a smile that lit up every room. She loved her family and friends with the ferocity of a Mama Bear and the heart of an angel. As the matriarch of a large, loving group of cousins, she led with gentle grace and a ready smile. Even in the face of her ongoing medical issues and ultimately, her terminal diagnosis, Carrie never stopped smiling, laughing, and delighting her nurses and caregivers. She remained kind and gentle until the very end.
She is survived by her devoted husband and best friend of 36 years, Kevin Smith; daughter Amber List; son Anderson Smith; father William Hodge (Rosalie); stepfather Robert Weaver; sister Katrina Willis (Julie); step-brother Kyle Weaver (Jeanna); step-sister Karla Weaver; sisters-in-law Kelly Yadon (Don) and Cheryl Caudill (Roger); nephews Bryant Yadon, Brentton Yadon, KC Weaver, Sam Willis, Augustus Willis, and George Willis; nieces Laura Adass, Amy Weaver, and Mary Claire Willis; grandchildren Jocelynn List and Samuel List; dear friend Jan Thomas (Mark); chosen daughters Rachel Holmes, Leah Reynolds, Samantha Coakley, and Ashley Ward; chosen grandchildren Madelynn Thalacker, Ella Thalacker, Karter Tom, Andrew Reynolds, and Elliot Holmes; grandpups Boss and Zane; and many beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by mother Caroline M. Weaver; uncles James T. Anderson and Brent, M. Anderson; mother-in-law Velma June (Linn) Smith; father-in-law Billy Mack Smith; and grandparents Charles M. Anderson and Mary E. (Twyford) Anderson.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 28 from 2-6 at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory in Greenfield, IN. The funeral service will follow at 6:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Sue Ann Wortman Cancer Center. And smile at a stranger. Carrie would have done the same.
