He was predeceased by: his parents, Jesse C. Gunn and Rose Gunn (Burkert); his siblings, Dolores "Peg" Gunn and Thomas Gunn; and his great grandchild Reid Bradley Gunn.
He is survived by: his wife Irene D. Gunn (Culp); his children, Mary McLain (Jacob), Monica Currey (Matthew), James Gunn Jr. (Rhonda) and Marvin Gunn (Christina); his stepchildren, Gwen Hernley (Doug), Gregory Stump and Garrett Stump (Mae); and also Sharon Taylor (James). He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren.
